about the effects of dieting ......

Dieting has certain predictable effects on your mind and body which undermine your efforts to lose weight and keep it off. An important experiment demonstrated these effects very clearly. 36 people were put on a diet for 24 weeks. After an initial brief 'high' this is what happened to them:

  • Obsession with food and a craving to eat - which lasted well beyond the length of the experiment, in some cases for years
  • Irritability, restlessness and loss of energy
  • In some cases, breaking the rules of the experiment, resulting in feelings of guilt

    The physical effects were just as alarming. Weight loss (on average 25%) was achieved, but this was accompanied by:

  • Rapid increase in weight, mostly in the form of fat, after the experiment – for all participants
  • Finishing by weighing up to 10% MORE than they had previously weighed
  • Loss of muscle in arms and legs
  • Detrimental effects on the heart - 50% reduction in output and 20% reduction in size
